Our Sprint series in the Spring proved to be very popular with a lot of our competitive-minded members,so we have thought up a format based on Score events that could prove equally popular, but we will also offer a "line" course for beginners who may find the score events a bit complicated.
The following courses will be available:
1) Simple score course with 15 controls on your map.
2) Advanced score course where the map has 15 controls marked, at 10 of these
there will be a map revealing the position of 10 more controls - making 25 in total.
You are not allowed to punch an extra "slave" control until you have punched the "master".
Remember them or bring a pen and mark them on your map. Mass Start at 11.00 for
Sprint Score Race.
3) Easy "line" courses, very suitable for beginners.
For courses 1 and 2 everybody has 45 minutes to visit as many controls as possible. All controls are worth one point. There is a time penalty - you lose one point for every two minutes (or part thereof) that you are late back. Remember to bring a watch.
Registration from 10.00 to 11.00.
Start times from 10.30 to 11.30 for Score event.
Fees: £3.00 senior and £1.50 junior. No charge for dibbers (but £25 if not returned).
These events are designated as Sprint Score Events in the Schedule.
Series co-ordinator: David McCann 0161 483 2061

District Events (previously known as Colour Coded Events) offer a range of courses classified by length and difficulty, ranging from White or Yellow (the simplest) up to Blue or Brown. Local Events generally have a more limited range of courses. The Red course is generally only available where specifically mentioned in the details.
The following table is a guide for newcomers to orienteering to help you select an appropriate colour coded course :
| Course | Difficulty | Length (km) | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| WHITE | very easy | 1.0 - 1.5 | especially for very young novices |
| YELLOW | easy | 1.5 - 2.5 | suitable for novices |
| ORANGE | fairly easy | 2.5 - 3.5 | for adult novices and teenagers |
| RED | fairly easy | 3.5 - 5.0 | for adult novices and runners |
| LIGHT GREEN | moderate | 2.5 - 3.5 | for those with some experience |
| GREEN | difficult | 3.5 - 5.0 | for experienced orienteers |
| BLUE | difficult | 5.0 - 7.5 | for experienced orienteers |
| BROWN | difficult | 7.5 - 10.0 | for experienced orienteers |
At Regional Events and above, the courses have pictorial control descriptions rather than written control descriptions. You may often find them used at District Events too.
